As The Global Capital Projects Director Role Is A Highly Strategic Position, You Will Be Overseeing, Governing And Influencing A Portfolio Of Capital Projects Across Johnson Matthey Valued At ~£400M Annually, While Providing Core Expertise, Capability And Assurance On Business-critical Capital Projects. The Portfolio Has A Complex Mix Of New Technologies Being Fast Tracked To Market; Significant Reinvestments In Modernisation Or Replacement Of Old Plants And Equipment; Regulatory Driven Upgrades; And Capacity Expansions; In Parallel With Development New Standards, Processes And Organisational Capabilities.


Since Its Creation In 2017 The Group Capital Projects Department Has Created Frameworks And Governance Processes And Implemented These Across All Sectors. The Group Continues To Evolve, Having Initiatives Underway To Streamline Processes, Improve Governance, Build Capability, And Create A ‘One Jm’ Approach In Delivering Capital Projects As Part Of A Transformation Towards A Target Operating Model (In Evolution).


The Global Capital Projects Team Is Now Becoming Established Across The Organisation And Is Seen As The Centre Of Expertise On Capital Projects. Key Business Decisions Are Based On The Assurance And Guidance From This Team With The Role Of The Global Capital Projects Director Being Central To How Capital Investment Decisions Are Made. The Role Holder Must Be Ambitious To Drive Change And Performance Improvement Whilst Maintaining The Excellent Stakeholder Relations Which Have Been Gained From An Honest And Collaborative Approach To Date.


This Role Has A Small Team Of Direct Reports Including Senior Project Managers, An Engineering Director, Project Controls And Analysts. There Is Dotted Line Reporting To Sector Capital Projects Directors Who Have Executional Accountability In The Business Today.


Capital Project Quality, Capabilities And Executional Effectiveness Are Of Critical Importance To Delivering Johnson Matthey’s Business Strategy – This Is Recognised At General Management Committee (Gmc) And Board Level. As Such This Role Will Have Extensive Influence On How The Business Matures Towards Consistently High Performance On Capital Project Execution While Bringing Technological Innovation To Customers At Pace.


Your Responsibilities


Strategy, Governance & Assurance

Develop And Deploy A Capital Projects Strategy For The Organisation, Aligning Senior Leadership And Business Stakeholders Around A Common Value Proposition And A Path Towards Capital Projects Excellence.

As A Key Business Partner For All Strategic Capital Projects, Provide Clear Perspective And Assurance To Senior Stakeholders (Including General Management Committee, Or Gmc, And Board), Particularly On Financial Investment Hygiene And Stage Gate Approvals To Ensure Appropriate Business Rationale, Commitment Of Resource And Capability, Application Of Rigour, Process Adherence And Benefits Realisation.

Proactively Engage With Key Stakeholders On Assuring Portfolio Health, Identifying Risks And Where Necessary Intervening And Providing Expertise On Remediation To Bring Projects Back On Track.

Provide A Control Tower For Strategic Projects, Ensuring Appropriate Treatment Based On Business Impact And Project / Programme Interdependencies.

Support Internal Audit Processes And Implement Findings Related To Group Capital Projects.

Functional Interdependencies

Ensure Integrated And Collaborative Working With The Heads Of Procurement, Legal, Finance, Strategy, Ehs, Quality And Audit, Nurturing Cross Functional Relationships To Support Delivery Of Capital Projects Across The Group. Work With These Departments To Streamline Processes And Establish A Clearly Defined Organisational Approach To Project Delivery.

Lead Through Proactive Engagement With The Sector Operations And Capital Projects Directors To Improve Cross Sector Collaboration And Consistently Excellent Project Delivery.

Understand And Socialise ‘Blockers’ To Performance And Collaborate With Peers To Positively Address Issues.

Cultural Changes

Evaluate And Communicate The Value Proposition From The Adoption Of Standard Ways Of Working And Continuously Improve Project Processes Such That Identified Benefits Are Realised.

Define And Embed The Role Of The Project Sponsor And Work With Project Teams, Sponsors And The Sectors To Ensure Understanding And Effectiveness Of The Role And Its Sub-teams; Engage Sponsors And Influential Leaders On Their Role In Project Governance And Assurance In Support Of Better Decision Making And Executional Performance.

Champion A Zero-tolerance Safety Culture To Ensure A Safe, Healthy And Secure Environment For All.

Embed A Strong Project Safety System And Embed Project Safety Processes And Performance Throughout The Project Lifecycle.

Financial Management & Capital Planning

Provide Expert Advice At The Group Capital Investment Panel On Allocation Of Capital Funds And Project Approvals, Per The Group Capital Expenditure Policy.

Participate In The Annual Capital Planning Cycle. Work Cross Functionally To Improve Understanding And Effectiveness Of Capital Budgeting And Forecasting.

Capability

Collaborate Across Group, Sectors And Sites To Raise Organisational Capability In Establishing Capital Project Excellence As A Core Competency.

Drive Rigour In Project Definition And Execution To Consistently Deliver Value Across The Project Portfolio.

Lead Deployment Of The Target Operating Model Across All Sectors,Including The Implementation Of Standard Organisational Structures And The Outsourced Delivery Partner Model. Continuously Evaluate Operating Model Effectiveness And Collaborate With Sector Leads To Overcome Issues Identified.

Drive A Culture Of Excellence, Raising Standards From Initial Business Case Management; Conversion From Concept To An Industrialised, Executable Project; Project Execution; With Pro-active Tracking Against The Agreed Business Plan And Benefits.

Streamline The Group’s Approach To Project Approvals And Reporting And Ensure Project Control Fundamentals Are Clearly Understood And Accepted Across The Business.

To Carry Out Any Other Duties Which Are Within The Employee’s Skills And Abilities Whenever Reasonably Required.

Requirements For The Role:

Bachelor’s Degree In Engineering Or Related Field Of Equivalent Experience (Masters Degree Preferred).

Extensive Experience As A Capital Project Manager, Including Direct Accountability For Multiple Projects In Excess Of £100Mm.

Significant Experience Or Managing Large Scale Capital Projects In Oil And Gas, Fmcg, Chemicals Or The Pharmaceutical Industry.

Senior Leadership Experience Combined With A Strategic Mindset And Business Acumen Indicative Of Career Agility And Role Mobility Within Jm.

Demonstrable Experience At Developing And Embedding Organisational Or Recognised Engineering And Project Management Policies, Frameworks, Methodologies And Standards.

Extensive Experience In Contracting Strategy And Administration, And In Practically Managing Major Contractors Through Engineering, Procurement, Construction And Handover.

Ability To Influence And Achieve Results From Others Without Direct Authority Including:

Demonstrated Ability To Lead Teams And Drive Effective Cross Team Collaboration.

Prior Experience Managing Direct & Indirect Reports Remotely.

Experienced And Skilled In Presenting To And Influencing Executive Teams (Gmc) And Board.

Demonstrable Examples Of Leading Safety Through The Project Lifecycle And In Operations.

Ability To Lead Complex Change And Simultaneously Manage Multiple Stakeholders And Competing Demands.
